Mau Mau - A Brain-Tough, Fun Card Game

This is a popular card game in Europe, considered the German version of Crazy Eights or Eight Off. The player's goal is to get rid of all the cards in their hand as quickly as possible. The game can be played by 2 to 12 people, making it a fun game for gatherings.

Decks And How to Start

The version uses a 32-card deck (removing cards 2–6 from the 52-card deck). Each player is dealt 5 cards, the remaining cards forming the draw pile. The first card is turned up to start the discard pile. If this card is a J, it will be replaced by another card.

Rules And Special Cards

Players take turns playing a card of the same suit or number as the card in the discard pile. If not, they must draw a card. Some cards have special effects:

  • 7: Force the next player to draw 2 cards
  • 8: Skip the next player's turn
  • 9: Change direction
  • J: Free card, the player chooses the next suit
  • A: The player must play another card of the same suit or draw a card

When there is one card left, the player must say Mau. If he forgets, he will be penalized with drawing more cards.

End And Score

The round ends when someone plays all their cards. The remaining cards are scored: 7-10 by value, A = 1, face cards = 10, J = 50. After many rounds, the person with the lowest score will be the overall winner.
