The main goal of chess is to checkmate the opponent, meaning to make their king unable to move legally without being captured.
During the game, players can make special moves such as castling to protect the king or promoting a pawn when it reaches the end rank, allowing it to be changed to a stronger piece, usually the queen. The game ends when one side is checkmated, accepts defeat, or falls into a draw.
